Yes it may be early but looking at the Scotties during the spring has revealed that they are not planning on taking a step down from last year. With new HC, Robbie Owens taking over for long time HC Troy Starr this season, many wondered what would happen to the football program. “It’s a more relaxed atmosphere…the guys are really taking to Coach, we loved Starr but Coach Owens is a different kind of coach, more laid-back…” Scottie Young.
Coach Owens has some BIG shoes to fill, Starr had the Scotties in the CIF hunt every year under his tenure. Coach Owens comes from an offensive background, he has installed his offense, and has the team running on all cylinders. Speed and physicality appear to be on the menu. With several wide open sets, is is going to take a very athletic team to match up against the weapons the Scotties have on offense.
On the Offensive side of the ball:
The QB Carson “Gunslinger” Baker, is the younger brother of Valhalla LB, Cade Baker. Baker transferred to Helix to get bigger looks from colleges, and play at a higher level of football. D1 prospect Scottie Young will likely be the #1 target for Baker, and add in 2 key receivers Rashad Scott, and Isiah Wooden and you’ve got speed threats on this offense. Jonathan Milsap transferred from Mira Mesa to Helix to join the Scotties in the fall of last year, now eligible to play, he too will make an impact with his physical play. It’s not going to be easy replacing Nate Stinson, maybe even impossible. The Scotties will rely on Kameron Tiumalu, and Ezekiel Noa to carry the load running the ball. If healthy look for RB Mugen Blue to join the mix at RB as well. The offensive line is led by 3yr starter 1st team All-CIF DT/C Blayke Taeatafa De La Rosa with newcomers Paka Rojas , Matthew Avii and Mario Bernall the offensive line is as good if not better this year than last year. All of them are 6 foot plus and over 280lbs.
On the Defensive side of the ball:
Owens has 2 D1 prospects, and several other collegiate level ready guys on roster. Those notable to mention. 2015 CIF Section Defensive Player of the year, Ezekiel Noa, and BGB 5-Star Scottie Young. CB Even Perkins is expected to contribute in the secondary. The D-line looks impressive with several key members over 6’2 and over 265lbs. They are big. A new comer to the Scotties LB core will be, Michael Shawcraft at 6’1 190lbs, and only a SO, this kid has star potential. The upswing is huge with him. He will have big shoes to fill to replace Jihad woods who is off to Wazzu in the fall.
